Support One Another

Adventure by SyarPage

We all have our way of using DeviantArt to engage and build relationships with other Deviants around art. We submit deviations and the community kicks into gear with comments, favs, shares and new watchers. But there are times when engagement is not as high, or it doesn't happen as quickly as normal.

We're thinking of a place dedicated to kindred activities (engagement prompts) that you could do for the Deviants in your community.

You might ask — How is that any different from how I comment, favourite and share right now?

  1. The deviations and Deviants you engage with will be aligned with the Kindred spirit of the DeviantArt community. In other words, they will be surfaced here because they may not have received the love and consideration they deserve.

Getting a fave or a comment on a work-in-progress could be more valuable than waiting for feedback on the finished piece.
  2. Your participation in this place could potentially earn you a NEW badge!

We are not sure what this would look like yet, but we know what it’s for.
  3. Our goal is for this to be a more fun and direct way to engage with your community!

So far, our working title for this place is called: Support. We referred to it recently in a journal about profile page ideas.

How Support Works by KatasiHK
What you put into it is what you get out of it.

We could add a ‘Support’ tab to your Watch (so you can support your community), and a similar tab to your Profile (so people can support you). The colored boxes represent the different Kindred activities that you could do for the Deviants in Your Community. Note: These prompts would only appear under the 'Support' tab and nowhere else on the site.

Support makes it sound more like IT. However, I do like the concept of it all. I think a lot of people just need a friend. So, having people leave more comments on works would help networking and the community grow.

1. I agree with some members here that the name could stand to be tweeked. "Support" is very minimal on details and I can imagine I'd click on something like that unless it had more description like "support other deviants" or something.

2. I'm really fuzzy on how this idea is going to be executed. @_@ I always love the idea of helping lesser known Deviants have recognition, but I fear that most of these ideas end up backfiring or creating new hoops to jump though just to be noticed.

3. No support comes to mind, for myself. Maybe recommending peoples' work into groups or featuring them somewhere with individuals with similar interests.

4. To qualify, I say being active in helping feature/support/etc... many deviants : )

5. Definitely something softer and warmer, like smiling emotes or someone giving a flower or heart or star...?

-'Engage', 'Support', as long as it works!

-I'm sure this idea will improve participation & help the community to grow! That's a big plus. It's a good idea all around, even if it's isolated to your watch. There could be a 'friends of friends' (i.e. your watch's watches) to see a greater variety of  deviations - or is that pushing it?

-Make points/commissions easy to donate/distribute

-Have the recipient of the support (or others) vote on helpfulness, have all the options completed at least once, reach a quota for # of deviants reached, etc

-Key, open window, heart, smiley, flower - it could be anything really :)

Not a fan of calling it "support", since that's already what dA Support is called...

I think it's a good idea, but something needs to be put in place to ensure that people don't leave stupid comments just to get badges, etc.

How do you feel about the name ‘Support’?

Since your already using show some love it's kind of difficult to imagine something better. :)

What are the pros and cons of this new idea?

I'm actually not seeing any cons as of now as i think that its nice to receive and give support and everybody will be free to participate or not.

What tasks would benefit you the most if you needed ‘Support’?

I think the best support is actually the commissions and this is for the people that cant support the expenses to be a premium member especially for young deviants. Of course any kind of support is appreciated that's why i think this could be a nice initiative.

What would qualify someone to earn a badge in ‘Support’?

I think that people don't need to fill all the options (requirements) because everybody as their unique style of doing things so i think some kind of level depending on any kind of support you give and if you reach that level you will then be rewarded with a badge.

Any ideas for the identity (visual aspects) of this badge?

A star a thumbs up or maybe a fella badge i think this also as something to do with the aspect that it will give on our profile so i will leave that to the badge creators. :)

  • What are the pros and cons of this new idea?
  • Well, a pro for this is more deviants will be supportive considering a lot of them are crazing about earning badges.
  • A con? Well I don't really see one.
  • What tasks would benefit you the most if you needed ‘Support’?
  • Getting feedback from watchers or other deviants, like critiques so I know what they like about my art,

Simple ideas are always the best ideas :)
Where are my keys ? Most my works are always "in progress," half finished, or a thought in theory, and never totally sure if one or the other is worth finishing. -- At school we always had teachers and other students looking over our shoulders and saying what they thought, good, bad, or neutral.
I really miss that kind of thinking / helping / happy environment. -- Drawing without feedback can be hard to stay motivated.

Also if someone was better at one thing than someone else, it really helped to get over those tricky bits, or parts of drawings that can get stuck in the .. "I'm no good at that, so I don't draw it basket." ... The "Support" could be like a think tank, where artists of all ages, levels and imagination can assist one another to learn & motivate in the worlds most unique online artist collective.
Q.#5 -- Badge could be a  beating heart ,, a quill and ink pot ,, an olden days type keyKingdom key D
I'd say paint brush, or thinking brain but they have already been used for other badges on dA.

1. Support is a good name, but I believe it could be improved, what about helping hands? or Deviant Hands? Deviant Appreciation, maybe?
2. It could help newer and underrated artists get a bit more of recognition and appreciation, but some people could only be benefited from this and not help others at all, there should be a system that ensures that everyone will receive support according to how much they support others.
3. Getting more watchers, art critiques & comments could potentially help me the most, as I believe I could improve faster with the help of the community.
4. Well, this question answers itself, people who support a lot, could get a support badge, people who dont will simply wont get it
5. I have an awesome Idea, the support badge should be a Dynamic badge, if you stop supporting people over time, the badge will eventually dissapear, some people will just help others until they get the badge and then vanish off forever from the support community, so, only the people who really & constantly support each others will have the badge, another idea is that just like the llama badge, this one could have different rankings and be renewed each month, for example, this month I supported 1000 artists, so the next month the golden support badge will be displayed on my profile, if the next month after that I only support 50 artists, my badge will turn into a bronze support badge, if I support none or just a few, it will be gone the next month, there should also be a special section dedicated to Deviants who supported the most people every month.

  1. How do you feel about the name ‘Support’? - It's kinda sounding like way too serious from another point of view, it sounds like pretty like it's moderator thing or something like this.
  2. What are the pros and cons of this new idea? - Pros - We have to make people to expand their likes of art styles. Most of them prefer to support already professional artists, leaving the beginners ones in behind.
  3. What tasks would benefit you the most if you needed ‘Support’?  - Support, understanding, fast answers on problems , and just helping to artists who are feeling down to stand up and go forward, motivate them to continue their work, even when they are hated.
  4. What would qualify someone to earn a badge in ‘Support’? - We need people to look at someone's profiles and by it they will see that some of users really care about that site and really want to help to other people to improve.
  5. Any ideas for the identity (visual aspects) of this badge? - We need people to motivate people to explore and make themselves be shameless about their art style. Like, dunno maybe points for exploring new artists?

Sweet :D (Big Grin)

1. How do you feel about the name ‘Support’?
That sounds a bit like it's a staff only thing. It could be named 'Encouragement' for example instead.
2. What are the pros and cons of this new idea?
Pros: The community is getting more interconnected and those who need attention to improve, get it.
Cons: I disagree with TinyMeowMix and spoems. It would be a non-obligatory to use addon to the website. Therefore I don't see any cons.
3. What tasks would benefit you the most if you needed ‘Support’?
I agree with the opinions of others so far. (I don't want to sound repetitive.)
4. What would qualify someone to earn a badge in ‘Support’?
I would guess it should be an 'upgrading' badge, depending on how long, at what frequency and of what quality one leaves feedback on someone else's deviations. This way there is, for badge
collectors, a reason to leave quality feedback and not just spam.
5. Any ideas for the identity (visual aspects) of this badge?
I think it should be black (then maybe bronze, silver, gold and diamond) pilot glasses that flash (a gif). That's at least what I think would look cool.

Here is an idea I have:
It shouldn't be random. There should be a sort function that in 'default mode' uses an algorithym that searches out the deviations that relativly deserve most attention (variables would be: age of deviation, age of account, amount of comments, amount of critiques, amount of views, amount of watchers, amount of faves recieved, amount of coments in relation to age of deviation, etc., etc.). In other modes it sorts after the variable you selected.

How do you feel about the name ‘Support’?

I'd prefer a friendlier name, as support sounds iffy, but other than that it is fine

What are the pros and cons of this new idea?

Pros: Get the community more involved with each others works

Cons: Distracts artists from their own work

What tasks would benefit you the most if you needed ‘Support’?

Feedback I suppose? I'd just appreciate a more intimate website honestly

What would qualify someone to earn a badge in ‘Support’?

A set amount required I suppose

Any ideas for the identity (visual aspects) of this badge?

A heart is the only thing I can think of

Support badge is a great idea.
Support is great way to get people out there to those who are hesitant!
It would benefit a lot of people, not just me, to those who flinch before uploading their artwork/styles.
Qualify? If their kind and supportive of peoples artwork and comments on their's that seems enough to me?
A game grid style health kit/health heart is a neat idea!

It's a great idea ! :-)
my answers :

1) the name "Support "for me it's ok, but i think it's better to call with a name more funny !
2) I think support  is a serious matter, I would not like people had this feature for their own purposes
3) more feedback and interation with the community
4) the seriousness of using this.
5) maybe two hands shaking ...

Thanks ! :-)

How do you feel about the name ‘Support’?

Seems reasonable.

What are the pros and cons of this new idea?

The pro would be that you would provide a direct community-centric forum or interface within the watch structure to help.  It seems like it would be a little more focused than just sifting through new accounts or newest critique-able deviations.

The con would be that you might be adding a layer to the site that will detract from what I believe the primary objective of DA is: putting finished art in front of art appreciators.

What tasks would benefit you the most if you needed ‘Support’?

I suppose if this new process/interface were successful, I would use it to garner more feedback for my deviations that didn't have that much.

What would qualify someone to earn a badge in ‘Support’?

I would think responding to a predetermined amount of these opportunities to provide help within the framework of the interface would suffice for a badge.  Perhaps you would allow for those in "need" to rate the respondents' effectiveness, much like the critique fair/unfair method.

Any ideas for the identity (visual aspects) of this badge?

Something along the design elements you are employing with the new watch feed and new grid layout would be interesting, with embedded options in the stacks of art in the available categories.
Felfr Featured By Owner Dec 30, 2015
I like this idea.

It would be encouraging to imagine this might encourage actual helpful feedback on WIPs instead of things like "that's nice". Maybe comments that build one's eligibility for a support badge need to be verified as helpful by someone else? Who else? I don't know. Maybe an elitist approach whereby only Staff and Senior Members could rate comments as helpful would actually be the best way to go about this. Any more lax approach I can imagine renders the badge a little meaningless.

I hope this comes to fruition and I am definitely a +1 on this! :highfive:

1. How do you feel about the name ‘Support’?
I would like that name, support is always a good thing that shows in the same moment you read it that you can do something awesome that would make someone really happy. I think it would lead deviants to be more active towards the community.

2. What are the pros and cons of this new idea?
I think if this idea would be implemented you could interact with other artists faster, simplier and that makes it more comfortable. It would also look more interesting. But on the other hand I don't think that it would help that much. It would be just easier for people who are already make an effort for giving artists some serious feedback. It should be more attractive to the community to take time for writing comments or critiques than now - maybe you could earn some kind of points, or you can show your effort through a support-statistic widget on your profile with the given llamas and favourites, written comments, and so on. Sad but true, most of the people need something where they see it's worth to invest more time.

3. What tasks would benefit you the most if you needed ‘Support’?
The best support are always comments. And not the short "Great!", "Cool" ones and something like this, there pretty heart-warming as well, but under real support I understand giving feedback and feedback is about saying what you like and what you maybe didn't like, even if you don't like something, a honest comment could help the artists very much to improve. The artist will learn what he or she can do very well and what not and what are the likes of his/her community. Critiques are also nice, but also a bit scary because they are looking so overserious. :D

4. What would qualify someone to earn a badge in ‘Support’?
Absolutely intensive support of the community. Writing serious and thoughtful comments and critiques, giving favourites, llamas, watch someone and do all of that a lot. As I said in question 2, maybe every deviant could earn points. And maybe at a specific amount of points you could get this badge for your huge effort. But you have to be careful with that. There could be people that want to get this badge and than give favourites and llamas completely random to earn the necessary points, same with mass watchers and so on. So maybe favourites and llamas shouldn't make much points ore even none, same for the watchs. Comments and critiques should give the most and maybe it's possible to make it dependent on the length of the comment. But to put it in a nutshell, it's nearly the same as the Senior Member award - when you contribute the community enough, you will earn this badge as an appreciation.

5. Any ideas for the identity (visual aspects) of this badge?
Many ideas! I think a big red (maybe pulsating) heart would fit perfect to show the passion of the artist to help the community. A good symbol would also be a hand. Or what about a cute little teddy bear? There are many ideas!

In any case it's a wonderful idea to do something for reactivating deviants to grapple with other deviants. People became too lazy these days.

  1. i like the name "support", it's very positive sounding :)
  2. Pros would be being able to have more ways to give feedback and 'support' the artist's that you're following. Cons is that the internet would be mad for a bit because you added something new, but the internet get's mad at everything, overall i think this would be a positive addition to the website.
  3. it would benefit me because it would encourage me :D when i'm encouraged, it brings out my favorite pieces of artwork.
  4. Maybe just supporting 10+ people? not entirely sure what could qualify to be honest.
  5. i kind of just like the little generic smiley face that is listed above C: maybe just polish that up a bit and i think people would like it.
